The linguistic expressions used in the works of the Italian poet inspire a discussion on the phenomenon of postmemory. The term, which was proposed by Marianna Hirsch to denote the collective trauma inheritance, has recently been broadened by the psychologists to include individual memory. The article encourages us to analyze the impact of the stress and hardships experienced by Amelia Rosselli’s mother and her immediate relatives before the poet’s birth. According to the latest developments in medicine and cognitive sciences, any psychological damage influences the physical and mental functioning of persons not only directly affected by it but also their descendants. References to the dark reality of the fascist Italy, the related murders of the poet’s family members, the sudden and premature deaths of her partner and brother, mental illness related to DNA memory and posttraumatic stress disorder, and, finally, her suicidal thoughts – they all permeatethe lines of her poetry. Rosselli's poetry draws on the memories of her miserable childhood, difficult relationship with her mother, and her lost love. The flashback devices, which are typical for her poetry, are brought into playas an attempt to process the trauma. In one the many explanations of her poetic motivation included in her literary works and comments, Rosselli points to her difficult life experiences as the factor that highly influenced her creative work. Just like the ideas, experience, and imagination, such bleak memories give shape to her poetry and open a space for literary expression. The memory of the more recent personal experiences, and the one that goes back to the experiences of the ancestors recalled in the works of Rosselli, not only shape the image of the poet’s and her relatives’ identity. The memory narrative in her works becomes also a report of historical and political events affecting the post-war Italy. Among other things, the activity of the poet’s family members in the political partyleaves an irreversible mark on her life. From an interdisciplinary angle, the expression of the past memories in Rosselli's work touches the fields of psychology, sociology, history, culture, politics, and art. |
