Popis: | The levels of activity of three oxidoreductases (glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate, NAD-de-pendent isocitrate, and glueose-6-phosphate dehydrogenases) were determined in pathologically keratinized (leukoplakic) and adjacent normal nonkeratinzed epithelium from the buccal mucosa of humans. Samples of histologically identifiable epithelial layers as well as of whole epithelium were isolated by microdissection from frozen-dried sections and assayed by ultramicrochemical methods. In the leukoplakic epithelium, as compared to the normal, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase activity was slightly higher, NAD-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase activity was more than twice as high, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity was about l/3 lower. These findings suggest a higher potential for the formation of energy-rich compounds but a lower potential for pentose phosphogluconate pathway activity in the leukoplakic epithelium. |
