Popis: | Thyroparathyroidectomized rats maintained on normal diet supplemented with thyroid extract were found to be more suitable for the assay of parathyroid hormone (PTH) than earlier preparations. The animals were most sensitive to PTH 3–5 days after thyroparathyroidectomy. For a routine assay, the animals (5/ group) were injected subcutaneously with 5, 10and 20 USP units PTH/100 g of body weight (both standard and unknown). The percentage increase in serum calcium, the absolute increase in serum calcium and the post-injection serum calcium levels are linear with the logarithm of the dose and any one of the 3 criteria may be used for the assay.
