Popis: Three different types of pathogenic prokaryotes (spiroplasmas, MLOs, and BLOs) can be found in the phloem of plants. They are more precisely localized in the sieve tubes of the phloem tissue, i.e. the vessels in which the photosynthetically-enriched sap circulates. Spiroplasmas are helical molli-cutes which have been obtained in pure culture as early as 1971 (Saglio et al., 1971) and fully characterized (Saglio et al., 1973; Whitcomb et al., 1986; Saillard et al., 1987). They are responsible for three plant diseases: citrus stubborn disease, corn stunt disease, and Syrian periwinkle yellows, respectively caused by S. citri, S. kunkelii and S. Phoeniceum. As pure cultures of spiroplasmas were available, polyclonal antibodies were produced as early as 1971 for the serological detection of S. Citri. Later, monoclonal antibodies (MA) as well as DNA probes were prepared.
