Popis: Surgical innovation is an important part of surgical practice. During the past 30 years, modern surgical care in orthopedics has greatly improved patients’ quality of life. Some advances apply clear solutions in clinical practice based on pathophysiological and anatomical concepts. However, other surgical procedures are innovations brought into practice with a degree of uncertainty. The growing pressure to innovate in orthopedics introduces a risk of widespread adoption of a new treatment before unexpected complications or technical issues are known. There have been multiple promising new technological and surgical developments that were adopted by many surgeons, only to later be proven inadequate compared to existing treatments, and occasionally, technology has been withdrawn from the market following publicized failures. This chapter discusses the promises and potential pitfalls associated with the introduction of new surgical techniques and implants, with specific reference to the patient with an unstable chest wall injury.
