The wide range of basal heart rate (HR) figures reported in the literature for Japanese quail indicates the presence of uncontrolled influences. With the use of radio telemetry, quail were found to have mean HRs of 360 ± 14.6 (SE) beats per minute (b.p.m.) when freely-moving. Immediately after restraint, which is common in traditional HR recording procedures, HRs significantly increased to 455 ± 22.2 b.p.m. During the 30 minutes following restraint HRs decreased; at 30 minutes after restraint, the HR (436 ± 17.9 b.p.m.) was significantly lower than immediately after restraint and higher than the freely-moving condition. No sex effect on HR was observed. |
