It has long been recognized on a theoretical level that widowhood divorce and separation if not immediately followed by re-marriage could have a negative impact on fertility. Davis and Blake specifically identified the amount of reproductive time spent after or between unions as one of the eleven intermediate variables bearing immediately upon fertility. Moreover a number of studies have concluded that instability of unions did in fact result in overall loss of fertility. Most of these studies were concerned with countries in which consensual sexual unions were relatively widespread such as many countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. Consensual unions tend to be unstable and thus the potential effect of sexual-union dissolution on fertility might be especially high in countries with high proportions of sexual unions consensual in nature. The present study is of one country in which consensuality is supposed to be widespread Costa Rica. The study treats reproductive time lost as a dependent variable and attempts to measure and to explain variations in the amount of reproductive time Costa Rican women spend after or between sexual unions. Specifically the study attempts to answer the following questions: [(1)] How much time is being lost to women as a combined result of widowhood separation or divorce at specific age intervals between ages 15 and 49? [(2)] How does the type of sexual union (legal or consensual) affect the amount of reproductive time lost? [(3)] How much of the difference in the amount of reproductive time lost by women in legal and consensual unions can be explained by the womens social background characteristics? (excerpt) |
