Popis: | The different linear activities of Iridium-192 wires which we have used for implantation, together with our system of dosimetry, have resulted in a 3-fold variation in the total time over which our standard tumour dose has been delivered to the 263 cases here assessed, which have been treated exclusively by interstitial therapy. Necrosis and recurrence rates have been related to overall treatment time for squamous carcinomas of the skin, lip, penis, anterior tongue and floor of the mouth. It is found, though without enough cases for statistical proof, that overall treatment time may vary from 3 to 9 days without apparent effect upon either necrosis rate or recurrence rate. We conclude that adjustments to overall time which have sometimes been suggested to compensate for such a supposed biological effect are unnecessary, and may even sometimes result in under-dosage of the tumour. |
