Popis: Elephant ivory is a material of important significance in art history. Modern conservation of this material requires the use of some chemicals as part of the preservation process. Our research on the effects of solvents used in preservation treatments was initiated in preparation for a major exhibition of ivory. Such surface-sensitive techniques as infrared reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy are used in this study to characterize the ivory surface after each treatment.
