Popis: | In 1992 Brazil Thailand Uganda and Rwanda were chosen by the World Health Organization to receive technical and financial support to prepare for future HIV vaccine efficacy (phase III) trials. A multicentered study group located in Rio de Janeiro Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo was established with the purpose of obtaining the accurate estimate of HIV incidence needed to determine the vaccine trial sample size. The authors describe recruitment strategies and sociodemographic data obtained from the first 200 cohort volunteers considered pertinent to the establishment of a 3-year open cohort of HIV-negative homosexual and bisexual men. This report covers the period from January 1995 to April 1996. 23% of the 318 potential participants aged 18-50 years screened from multiple sources in the state of Rio de Janeiro were seropositive for HIV 32% for syphilis and 46% for hepatitis B. The sociodemographic data from the first 200 participants of this HIV-negative cohort suggest that the cohort volunteers are an appropriate sample of the general male population of the state of Rio de Janeiro. |
