A ten year retrospective study was conducted on all major gynaecological operations performed in the UCTH, Calabar, from 1st January, 1993 to 31st December, 2002. The study showed that 3458 major gynaecological surgeries were carried out. There were 596 (17.2%) hysterectomies of which 104 (17.4%) were performed on nulliparous women. In this paper, we report on the indications, social implications, complications and management outcome of this procedure in the nullipara in our society and suggest ways of preventing some of the conditions that necessitated hysterectomy ab initio.
