Popis: | Abnormal thyroid function has been reported in pregnancies complicated by hyperemesis gravidarum. This paper reports on the preliminary observations on the thyroid function at the time of presentation in 51 consecutively admitted hyperemetic patients. Elevated total thyroxine concentration (above our laboratory reference range for pregnancy) was found in 45.1% of hyperemetic patients, and these patients had in association significantly elevated total and free triiodothyronine and free thyroxine concentrations, while the thyroxine binding globulin and thyroid stimulating hormone concentrations were similar to the rest of the hyperemetic patients. In the whole group, there were significant correlations between the total and free thyroid hormones. The results suggest that a form of mild but unequivocal hyperthyroidism is present in hyperemetic patients on admission. The likely aetiological factor of the hyperthyroidism is discussed. |
