This paper examines the metric notes of Servius' Aeneid Commentary, which deal with some peculiarities of morphosyntax, of semantics or even of what is nowadays referred to as verbal metrics. In most cases, those commentaries are focused on deviations from classical rules, which are justified by metrical necessity, following grammatical theory on latinitas and uitia et uirtutes dictionis. The main aim of this study is to analyse how Servius systematizes and personalizes the existing terminology of previous grammatical studies, and to show the inconsistencies emerging from the weight of tradition or simple carelessness. |
