ІНШОМОВНА ПІДГОТОВКА У ЗБРОЙНИХ СИЛАХ США ТА ВЕЛИКОЇ БРИТАНІЇ: ДОСВІД ДЛЯ УКРАЇНИ

Popis: The article identifies the features of the systems of foreign language training in the armed forces of the world leading nations – the US and the UK. They include: unification and centralization (training according to unified standards and concentration in the single educational institution); course organization (conduct of courses of various duration, oriented at the customer’s needs); constant learners’ immersion into foreign language environment (attraction of native speaker instructors, internship abroad); individualization and differentiation (consideration of learners’ individual differences in training); active use of innovative methodologies and technologies (for instance, distance and blended learning). The article makes a comparative analysis with the system of such training in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and provides definite recommendations as to its improvement. For instance, it is recommended to withdraw subject «Foreign Language» from the list of educational subjects in the higher military educational establishments and transfer it into the system of course training. It would enable students’ more purposeful foreign language learning for professional needs and rational use of resources. Learning foreign languages at the courses should become mandatory for all the Armed Forces of Ukraine personnel. The purpose of the learning should become the attainment of standardized language level 2 according to NATO STANAG 6001. Organizationally, foreign language training has to be concentrated in the single educational establishment – Defense Language Institute of Ukraine, which should be established. It would provide unification and standardization of the foreign language training across the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations. The Institute should become not only the educational but also a research center in the area of linguistics and foreign language methodology. Apart from this, it is recommended to more actively introduce foreign language innovative methodologies and technologies through continuous professional development of the teaching personnel. Lessons learnt from foreign language training in the US and the UK armed forces would provide an opportunity for the improvement of the foreign language training of the Armed Forces of Ukraine personnel with the aim of achieving interoperability during fulfilling functions with the personnel of the Armed Forces of NATO and other international security organizations.
