Popis: | At the request of the Sleep Medicine Review editors, our group was asked to write an article advocating against ‘hypnotic effects of melatonin’. It was intended to be the companion paper for a contrary review, which is one supporting the pro viewpoint. Dr Zhdanova’s review has adopted a slightly modified stance by presenting a case based on the available scientific literature not for the hypnotic, but the ‘sleep-promoting’ effects of melatonin. This is not a pedantic distinction, as both Zhdanova’s and our papers agree that melatonin’s effects do not conform to those of classical hypnotic drugs. Rather, we and other groups prefer soporific to hypnotic, and Zhdanova chooses to call melatonin a ‘sleep-promoting hormone’ in description of its effects on humans and diurnal animals. Given that ours and Zhdanova’s reviews were designed to present contrary evidence, we were surprised to find that this was not the only manner in which these two papers agree.
