EFFECTIVENESS OF DEBATES IN TEACHING ENGLISH

Popis: The article is devoted to the effectiveness of debates in teaching English. It is stated that debates develop students’ all four basic languagecommunication skills –listening, reading, speaking and writing. It is emphasized that the effectiveness of the debate use in teaching English, as well as in preparation for the exam depends largely on the teacher's awareness of the possibility and appropriateness of its application and correlation of the debates with the exam structure. Likewise, it is necessary to take into account the language level of the group. At English lessons, debates can be used for the purpose of generalizing, systematizing and consolidating the educational material. The reasons for students’ numerous mistakes in speaking are presented. They are related to poor development of general soft skills in conducting a discussion and expressing the point of view. The discussed technique can help students to develop necessary academic and life skills in mastering a foreign language.
