Popis: The contrasts obtainable at kilovoltages between 60 and 125 with several grids have been measured with a water phantom simulating tissue. The effects of X-ray penetration and scattered radiation on contrast have been examined independently. It is shown that at 125 kV for thick sections which produce much scattered radiation, the customary values of contrast can be obtained by using more efficient grids. Medical radiographs of the chest, abdomen and stomach confirm the physical measurements. The chest radiograph showed increased tissue contrast and due to increased bone penetration details behind the bone structure were made visible. Contrast in bone is reduced. The reduction of exposure with increase of kilovoltage has also been measured. The high kV technique appears to be most useful for examination of thick sections, where contrast can be maintained and useful exposure reductions (up to 7 times) obtained.
