Popis: In patients with splenomegaly, the volume of the spleen can be determined by ultrasonic scanning. Systematic studies were made to evaluate the accuracy and precision of the method. Compared with the weight of the removed spleens a standard deviation of 197 ml was found between calculated volume and splenic weight, but compared with known volumes of spleen models in phantom experiments a standard deviation of 111 ml was found. Double determinations of spleen volumes were performed to estimate the precision of the method: a standard deviation of 59 ml and 66 ml was found in phantom and in vivo experiments respectively. From the studies the standard deviation between the calculated volume and the true spleen volume in situ may be estimated to be about 125 ml. It was found that the information transfer from the patient to the storage oscilloscope and the manual operation of the scanning unit represents the greatest source of error (75 % of the total variance), and that identification of the organ boundaries on the scanning pictures (13 % -) and patient conditions (7 % -) are less important sources of error.
