Popis: Transition metal carbides such as Mo2C are promising catalysts for reactions of environmental and economic importance because they exhibit a similar electronic structure to nobel metals which makes them active in the absence of a metal phase. However, their potential is limited by their inherent non-porous (low surface area) nature. In this work, a high-surface area, mesoporous Mo2C was synthesized via a template liquid/solid reaction. Different reactant ratios and purification routes were explored to obtain only Mo2C with the desired textural properties (≈200 m2/g). The resulting mesoporous catalyst was tested in two different reactions [reverse water gas shift (RWGS) and hydrogenation of nitroarenes] and compared against a non-porous commercial Mo2C. The synthesized catalyst showed a 100% selectivity toward CO in the RWGS reaction at temperatures as low as 300 °C and achieved a 100% conversion in the hydrogenation of nitroarenes after 3 h of reaction, significantly outperforming the non-porous commercial catalyst.
