Popis: The problem of achieving a wider and yet more uniform field of irradiation in the treatment of cervical carcinoma remains an important one. The necessity for this has been emphasized before (9). Briefly it can be stated that radiation treatment methods are limited by a maximum dose which can be delivered without causing dangerous necrosis and injury, while the effectiveness of a method depends upon a minimum dose which will be lethal to all tumor cells. In the treatment of cervical carcinoma these limitations become manifest in local slough and infection in the face of over-dosage, and in recurrence and metastases in the case of under-treatment. Because of these limitations, various methods have been adopted in the hope of solving the problem of uniform radiation. Examples of these are interstitial irradiation with needles and seeds, pneumoperitoneum with external therapy, treatment through external sciatic ports, and intravaginal cone therapy.
