Popis: The findings relating to mortality during a short heat wave in New York City in August 1975 are described. The very great majority of those who died, who would not have died if there had been no heat wave, were elderly people of both sexes and irrespective of color who had underlying organic disease. Ischemic heart disease was the most prominent cause of excess deaths. Prophylactic measures to reduce mortality in future heat waves are discussed.
