Cold War Exile and Diary Writing

Popis: The author argues that life writing by Romanian exiles in the US during communism, especially that of Matei Călinescu, has been mainly a site of recovering one’s lost homeland in writing and reflecting upon one’s identity and its many transformations. Călinescu’s diaries record and negotiate the writer’s identity, alterity, and questions of margin and centre, both before and after the fall of communism. In examining Călinescu’s life writing, Luca is interested in the way he reflects upon his exilic experience as a member of the cosmopolitan community in the US and the Romanian diaspora at large, investigating how un/belonging is recorded.
