Eye-safe pulsed optical sources are needed for applications such as remote sensing and imaging. Er-doped fiber sources offer the benefit of efficient direct eye-safe operation and compatibility with reliable fiber-pig-tailed components. However the reported energy per pulse has been limited to date to less than 1.5 mJ for various configurations, e.g., Er or Yb/Er doping, nanosecond to microsecond pulses, and slightly (M2=1.6) to highly multimode (M2=8.5) fibers [1,2]. In this work, we show that over 10 mJ can be extracted from a multimode Er-doped fiber in 140 ns pulses, and with a beam quality suitable for the above mentioned applications. |
