Popis: Summary A study of patients with coronary heart disease and control subjects has been carried out in Malaysia. There were no significant differences in relative weights, blood pressures, hemoglobin and hematocrit values, platelet counts, and smoking habits. Skinfold thickness, fibrinogen and cholesterol levels were significantly higher in the patients. Evidence of a greater coagulation activity and of a lesser fibrinolytic activity was found in the patients. The consistency of the direction of these differences and their relatively large magnitude may be due to the selection of control subjects with no family history of coronary heart disease, to the apparently lower frequency of atherosclerosis in control subjects in developing countries compared to Western countries and to dietary factors. The nature of the relationship between coagulation and fibrinolysis modifications on one hand and atherosclerosis and its complications on the other hand is not clear, and will be examined in groups of young people with different susceptibilities to coronary heart disease.
