Most of the bacteria in the genus Xanthomonas are plant pathogens. The genus includes six species and no less than 140 different pathovars in the species X. campestris [17]. The parasitic development of xanthomonads includes three stages: an epiphytic stage when the bacteria adhere to the surface of aerial organs and multiply without causing symptoms, an intercellular parasitic stage within parenchyma, causing necrotic spots on aerial organs and a vascular and systemic parasitic stage inside the xylem which is often associated with a more or less complete colonization of the plant. |
