Popis: Delamination is a common failure mode observed in fiber reinforced polymeric composites when subjected to various thermo-mechanical loads. Additional reinforcements at the interlaminar regions or in the through-thickness direction have shown to improve damage resistance and durability of these composites. Additive manufacturing, when used for custom-printing polymer reinforcements over carbon fiber prepregs prior to layup, has shown to increase the interlaminar shear strength and fracture toughness values. In this paper, the rationale behind the improvement in interlaminar properties due to printed reinforcements have been investigated by understanding the bond quality between prepreg resin and printed polymers. The factors affecting the bond quality have been explored by developing a validated three dimensional finite element model.
