Popis: The interaction of magma with crustal carbonates can alter the physical properties of the melt and increase the volatile budget, thus it has a profound impact on volcanic unrest and eruptive dynamics. Short-term (second to hours) interactions take place in syn-eruptive regimes, as magma ascends and interacts with entrained carbonate wall rock fragments. The dissolution of carbonate clasts in magma generates pockets of Calcium-enriched, low viscosity, contaminated melts, and carbon dioxide gas bubbles. Bubble migration promotes mechanical mingling between the contaminated melt and the host magma catalyzing magma mixing. In this work we quantify the amount of gas released by the carbonate dissolution and the timescale and mechanism of this process. Our model results show that the mingling and mixing between the contaminated melt and the host magma promotes water and carbon dioxide exsolution. The timescale of the mixing process has important implications for the eruptive dynamics and the interpretation of volcanic deposits.
