Popis: | SummaryAccording to the combined report of the EDTA, end stage renal disease due to analgesicassociated nephropathy was present in more than 20 per cent of patients, starting treatment with regular hemodialysis during 1977 in Belgium. Analgesic-associated nephropathy is the most common nephropathy in our area. During the last six years, sixteen patients (5 per cent of patients with analgesic-associated nephropathy) presented a transitional cell carcinoma in the upper urinary tract: in 10 cases a renal pelvic tumor and in four eases a ureteral tumor. Two patients were found with both tumors. There are arguments for a carcinogenic role of phenacetin. The presence of a solitary ureteral tumor in 4 patients is noteworthy as this type of carcinoma is very rare. In one patient, who underwent a nephroureterectomy for a tumor of the renal pelvis, a renal cell carcinoma was detected three years later in the contralateral kidney.
