Different contributions in the design research community propose models to understand subjective experience with products. Recently, the temporal aspects of experience have particularly been highlighted, leading to initial studies of experience over time. In addition, many researchers interested in experience, addressed its aesthetic qualities. However, the temporal structure of the aesthetic experience has been rarely addressed in the design research community. In this paper we clarify theses concepts and we introduce an initial framework of aesthetic experience over time. Our framework focuses on three structural components: body and senses interaction, discourse elements and narrative dimension and has three goals. Firstly, we will show how to apply it as a descriptive framework, by allowing representing a significant range of existing aesthetic experiences in order to understand, accommodate and appropriate them. Secondly, we discuss its potential to be evaluative, permitting to analyze and compare the experiential potential of design situations in regards of aesthetic experience over time. Finally, we investigate its generative power, how it helps the creation of future aesthetic experiences. |
