Popis: | The untimely death of Trevor Shaw on 26 September 1972 in a railway accident at the age of only 44 was a grievous blow to his many friends and colleagues. He was at the height of his powers and there was universal confidence that he would continue to make striking discoveries and would play a very significant role in British science for many years. He had been elected F.R.S. in 1971. He was born in York on 18 March 1928 the only son of Donovan and Mona Shaw. His family moved several times in connection with his father’s work on the Railways, finally to Carlisle where his father was in charge of the marshalling yards which were then among the largest in Europe. Trevor was deeply attached to his parents and he had throughout his life an especial pride in his mother’s practical sagacity. He was educated at Great Ayton and Bootham School in York and, although a happy and intelligent boy, he showed little sign of his later brilliance. From Bootham School he went to Clare College, Cambridge, to read medicine. |
