Popis: International audience; During the later Middle Ages, new signs appeared in the graphic fields of inscriptions, filling blank spaces: line-fillers. Geometric forms, foliate motifs, and even animals were introduced into epigraphic documentation at a moment of change in the graphic economy of inscriptions, in turn connected to changes in the linguistic and technical economy of writing. This article aims to explain the complex semiotic nature of these elements, their relationships with other units of writing such as the word, the line, the verse, and the text, and their roles in punctuating and visually articulating medieval inscriptions.
