Popis: Summary Assessing natural fracture networks in subsurface reservoir rocks is highly challenging and it is useful to incorporate data from outcrop analogs. We focus on the Upper Carboniferous of the Piesberg quarry in the Lower Saxony Basin of NW-Germany, being an excellent outcrop analogue for Upper Carboniferous tight gas fields in the region. We established a 3D digital outcrop model from terrestrial laser scanning (t-LIDAR) data and present a new automated workflow for quantitative spatial characterization of fracture networks, which is used for the construction of a DFN model. The comparison with subsurface data showed that three of overall four main fracture orientations in the quarry are also relevant in actual subsurface reservoirs at depth. Our workflow may improve the characterization of fracture networks in outcrop reservoir analogs by efficiently assessing large t-LIDAR datasets and integrating such data into 3D digital outcrop models. The ability to characterize the spatial variation of fracture statistics is essential to understand the complexity of the fracture network and its integration into DFN models. This study contributes to a better application of outcrop analog data into naturally fractured reservoirs in the subsurface, reducing uncertainties in the characterization of this reservoir type at depth.
