This introduction covers the key concepts discussed in the book Theoretical Discussions of Biography: Approaches from History, Microhistory, and Life Writing . It presents an overview of how the other chapters in the book are organized. The first section of the book contextualizes the research field of Biography Studies in scholarly history and discusses the most important challenges of Biography Studies today and the influence exercised on biography by journalism. The second section demonstrates that biography and history are closely related and shows the cross-fertilizations among biography, journalism and historiography in the nineteenth century. The third section analyzes the rise and theoretical premises of microhistory and discusses the important methodological intersections between biographical research and microhistory. The last section reveals the fundamental distinction between biography and the current practice of 'Life Writing' in academia.
