Crises occur due to different reasons and can produce various effects. It is seen that crises that deeply affect tourism are mostly caused by non-sectorial developments such as terrorism and security threats, health problems and natural disasters. These crises affect people’s perceptions about consumption to a large extent, albeit temporarily, and cause the decision to travel to be suspended. The Covid-19 pandemic has deeply affected tourism as one of the biggest health and economic crises we have witnessed in recent years. With the onset of the crisis, international borders were closed, economic activity slowed down, and legal, economic and socio-psychological barriers to travel emerged simultaneously. The sudden and voluminous demand contraction that emerged deepened the effects of the crisis by triggering many different problems. In this section, the effects of crises and, more specifically, the Covid-19 epidemic, on tourism are explained within the framework of crisis and crisis management strategies. © Dogan Gursoy, Mehmet Sarıışık, Robin Nunkoo and Erhan Boğan 2021. |
