Popis: | In the field of risk management and prevention, particularly in developing countries, traditional knowledge is often regarded as a science of the past by young people or, on the contrary, as a panacea by outsiders. In the context of global change in the marine environment and the growing need for information to increase disaster prevention capabilities, the knowledge of fishermen in West Africa was examined. Semi-structured interviews and focus group meetings with fishermen aged 50 years or older were used to explore ways of understanding and predicting changes in the marine environment. This qualitative method gives us the opportunity to discover the universal knowledge that fishers have accumulated in their way of predicting the weather. Senegalese fishermen observe and interpret the variability and changes in environmental parameters, such as the state of the sea and the nature of the seabed, the strength and direction of winds, the movement of stars, the behaviour of animals, and the colour and shape of elements in their environment in order to interpret the observations. The understanding, interpretation and, subsequently, the meaning they develop from their observations are based on empirical knowledge that can be tested and confirmed scientifically. In this sense, fishermen's knowledge can be considered universal knowledge and cannot be opposed to scientific knowledge. And, when properly transcribed, it is useful for conventional marine research and disaster management, especially in poorly studied areas, if it is considered universal knowledge. |
