Popis: Gijsenbergh offers an innovative analysis of the interwar crisis of democracy. He shows that the fight against extremism in the 1920s and 1930s cannot be reduced to a clear-cut struggle between democrats and anti-democrats. Self-proclaimed democrats also clashed with each other, because they defended contrasting democratic values. Gijsenbergh illustrates his point by examining how Dutch politicians, publicists, and activists reacted to Communism and Fascism. He explains that anti-communists and anti-fascists feared different threats. Subsequently, Gijsenbergh lists their countermeasures. These caused a dilemma: how could democrats defend democracy, without undermining it? The bulk of this chapter reveals the conflicting views of advocates of parliamentary democracy, disciplined democracy, and moral democracy. This leads to the conclusion that democrats in the Netherlands redefined what democracy meant to them.
