Acute abdominal pain in childhood is a common but diag-nostically challenging problem facing Emergency Departme nt personnel.Experienced physicians use a combination of key clinical at tributes to as-sess and triage a child, but residents and inexperienced phy sicians maylack this ability. In order to assist them, we used knowledge discoverytechniques based on rough set theory to develop a clinical de cision modelto support the triage. The model was implemented as a module f or theMobile Emergency Triage system { a clinical decision suppor t system forthe rapid emergency triage of children with acute pain. The a bdominalpain module underwent a clinical trial in the Emergency Depa rtmentof a teaching hospital. The trial allowed us to compare in a pr ospec-tive manner the accuracy of the system to the triage performa nce of thephysicians and the residents. The preliminary results are v ery encourag-ing and they demonstrate validity of developing computer-b ased supporttools for a clinical triage. Keywords: Rough set theory; Emergency triage; Clinical trial; Clinic aldecision support systems; Handheld computers |
