This standard is based on the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage’s [Riksantikvaren] strategy for monitoring of subsurface deposits of archaeological or cultural significance (“cultural deposits”) and on the guidance document that was developed as a part of this strategy1. The standard has been produced by a committee consisting mainly of representatives of Norwegian organizations involved in the field of environmental investigation of cultural deposits. This standard will assist both developers and those responsible for sites of archaeological/historical significance in abiding by the relevant legislation and conditions for environmental monitoring when disturbing or building upon cultural deposits. It will also specify the responsibilities of the developer in such cases. The standard applies to activities pertaining to the Directorate for Cultural Heritage’s management of the automatically protected medieval towns of Trondheim, Oslo, Tønsberg, Skien, Sarpsborg, Hamar, Stavanger and Bergen.
