Popis: | Tetrodotoxin and tetrodotoxin-like compounds from the eggs of the Costa Rican frog, Atelopus chiriquiensis. Toxicon15, 135–139. 1977.—A mixture of the potent neurotoxins tetrodotoxin and chiriquitoxin was isolated from the eggs of gravid female Atelopus chiriquiensis frogs from Costa Rica. These toxins must occur in the eggs in a bound form, since they were not extracted by homogenization with water but were extracted into 3% acetic acid. Apparently, the dilute acid releases these toxins from their water-insoluble native state in the eggs. This finding may be important with respect to the question of how these frogs and other tetrodotoxin-containing species can tolerate the high concentration of tetrodotoxin in their bodies. |
