Popis: | The properties of alkylthiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au have been extensively characterized in the past few decades by exploiting a one-electron reductive desorption process. To date, oxidative desorption of thiol SAMs has been relatively understudied because the Au surface can be roughened during the oxidative desorption event. In this paper we describe the oxidative desorption of alkylthiols with cyclic voltammetry and report the effect of pH, thiol functional group and chloride concentration on the peak potential for desorption. These peak potentials are compared with the visible observation of Au surface roughening and the oxidative dissolution of Au, which will be verified with atomic absorption spectroscopy. The implications of these results in terms of finding a replacement for cyanide in industrial gold leaching are discussed. |
