Popis: | A three dimensional biomechanical analysis of the joints of the thumb is presented. Activities investigated included developing an isometric twisting moment on a fixture representing a screw top jar, and squeezing the same fixture between the thumb and the fingers. The spatial configuration of the hand was obtained using two cine cameras simultaneously and synchronously with external force measurements. The position and orientation of the major load bearing structures were determined from cadaveric studies. Equilibrium equations were solved together with the relevant constraint conditions to assess the loads transmitted by the joints. Compressive joint forces up to twice and three times the external forces were calculated at the interphalangeal and metacarpo-phalangeal joints respectively. The effects of antagonistic muscle activity, and the load sharing between the adductor muscles were investigated. |
