The following threepartite contribution rests on the presentations made in the context of the '16. Wissenschaftliche Tagung der Kriminologischen Gesellschaft', September 5-7, in Vienna. In Part I the authors set out to introduce alternative concepts and alternative practices of justice and security as they have been tried out in the course of a large EU financed scientfic project: 'Developing alternative understandings of security and justice through restorative justice approaches in intercultural settings within democratic societies - ALTERNATIVE'. In the first part we present the outlines of this project and we explicate the rationale of restorative justice that has been underlying this project. Restorative justice has become a rapidly growing field of research and practice, with the criminal justice system as the gravitational centre at its core. Within the criminal justice system, restorative justice promotes alternatives to punishment in dealing with the aftermath of crime. The application of restorative justice in complex, urban, or intercultural contexts and therefore to social issues and conflicts which do not fall within the category of 'crime' remains less explored. Yet such restorative practices raise a whole set of conceptual and practical challenges around restorative approaches to conflict resolution and their effects. We report in the following parts on two of Alternative’s action research projects, one in Vienna and one in a small Hungarian town. |
