Popis: Placental giant cells in 10 cows were studied with light and electron microscopy. The period between day 45 of pregnancy and full term was covered. Bi- or multinucleate giant cells were present in the cryptal epithelium as well as in the trophoblast. The cryptal giant cells as a rule had big nuclei and extremely scanty cytoplasm with few organelles. They were provided with microvilli interlocking with corresponding trophoblastic microvilli. The trophoblastic giant cells had large nuclei and huge cytoplasmic components but no microvilli. The organelle system was conspicuous. The cells appeared to undergo developmental changes related to secretory activity and subsequent degeneration.
