Popis: | The importance of an interaction analysis for the design of open plane frames resting on soil has been well established. For frames on beam foundations, the soil support may be modeled as a continuum, particularly when non-linear elastic behavior for soil is envisaged. For many open plane frames and particularly for the interior frames of long structures, which may at times rest on a raft foundation, a plane-strain approach is commonly adopted for representing the soil support in order to achieve savings in core memory requirement and computational effort. In the study reported herein a comparison is made between the more realistic half-space continuum and the plane-strain approach to examine the approximation involved in the latter type of representation of soil. Whether presence of other plane frames in the vicinity will impart a confining effect to the soil support and thereby justify a plane-strain modeling of the soil is also investigated. |
