General method of such waste management is either burning, or land filling. Other non-conventional methods applied are the anaerobic digestion (AD) of the waste and production of a combination of methane (CH4) and other gases, generally known as “Biogas”. But CH4 is a green-house gas and the process has its own disadvantages. This article sheds light on production of hydrogen (H2) from biomass in various pathways viz. Thermo-chemical conversion, microbial conversion etc. Various microbial pathways are discussed. Also, the potential market of this clean and green energy, and governmental policies are described. |
