The accumulation of zinc by Puffer fish liver slices has been studied under various physical and chemical conditions. Zinc can be accumulated by Puffer fish liver cells against an apparent sevenfold concentration gradient by a passive mechanism not directly coupled to metabolic energy. Kinetic studies of the system reveal that this process consists of a first-order sorption of the zinc to binding sites on or within the cell. Although the binding site is not specifically characterized, it is profoundly altered by changes in temperature, pH, and chemical environment. |
