Multistage make switches, built with combination of size E ignitrons and mechanical switches, are used in the power supply system of RFX both as protection crowbar for the poloidal circuit and for the operation of the poloidal and toroidal AC/DC flat-top converters after the start-up phase. Ignitrons assure short closing times with low jitter, while mechanical switches cope with the high I2.t capability required. Besides the design criteria and description of the system, the results of the tests concerning closing time and current commutation are reported. Finally the fault conditions, the protective actions and the control system of the switches are presented and discussed. |
