Prevalence and risk factors of COPD in dairy farmers the AIRBAg study

| Popis: | Farmers have a higher prevalence of respiratory symptoms than the general population despite a lower smoking exposure. The AIRBAg study was instigated to assess the prevalence and to to define risk factors of COPD in dairy farmers. In a cross-sectional study, randomly selected dairy farmers fulfilled a self-administred questionnaire and had an occupational health check-up with elecronic-mini-spirometry and standard spirometry. They were then referred to a pulmonologist if they presented at least one of the following items: chronic cough, chronic bronchitis, wheezing, dyspnea and/or a ratio FEV1/FEV6 The study population consisted of 1203 analysed farmers of whom 525 (43.6%) were referred to a pulmonologist. Among them, this screening process idendified 16 (1.3%) COPD cases including 8 non smokers and 5 with a FEV1 The AIRBAg study showed an unexpected low prevalence of COPD in dairy farmers, despite a higher prevalence of respiratory symptoms. No occupational risk factor was demonstrated. |
