The application of molecular techniques to genetic problems continues to result in remarkable advances in understanding of the etiology of genetic diseases, benign variations in phenotype [the appearance, rather than the genetic composition (genotype) of the individual], carrier detection, and prenatal diagnosis. Most of the progress has been in conditions inherited in simple Mendelian fashion (that is, single gene defects) and generally when the mutation has been in the coding region of the gene. What follows is designed to give a basic understanding of molecular genetics as it applies to cancer. |
