Popis: | The primary object of the present communication is to suggest a correlation of the Lower Limestone group between Renfrewshire and Ayrshire. The sediments of these two areas are no longer in direct continuity: whatever may have been the case in the past, they are now separated by a belt of the underlying lavas. As a consequence no horizon can be followed without interruption from one district to the other: the correlation must remain a matter of inference alone. The method followed has been to examine the sequence as developed in each area, and to use as a basis those horizons which retain their peculiarities throughout the region: one can naturally expect that these “constants” should pass over from one district to the other, and especially so in view of the fact that the upper parts of each sequence are sufficiently alike to warrant the belief that the two areas were in complete communication when those sediments were originally deposited. A glance at the published maps will show that the limestone strata of the two districts approach each other closely at two points. The first is by way of the long trough running south-west from Barrhead through Neilston to Lugton; the second is in the similar depression passing through Castle Semple Loch from Howwood to Lochwinnoch. A comparison of the limestones of Barrhead and Lugton has the advantage that the type succession of the Lower Limestone group comes from Hurlet, close to Barrhead; nevertheless, although the sequence is there well known This 250-word extract was created in the absence of an abstract |
